Tyler and Becky : Engaged

Tyler and Becky have a look in their eyes when they’re around each other that just screams “I have to be with you!” I love it. It’s a look that is nearly impossible to fake, and I loved having the opportunity to try to bottle some of that feeling on film.

Their wedding was this past Saturday at the beautiful Blenheim Farm, so we opted to shoot a few engagement photos there as well. More to come from this stunning couple soon…

Keith and Lucy Are Having a Baby

Lucy is a fellow photographer here in Charlottesville, and we discussed a little trade a few months ago that just happened to be timed perfectly for us to do some maternity photos of Lucy and her husband, Keith. I love how comfortable they are with each other and with being in front of the camera (not always the case, as we prefer to be behind the lens). They are such naturals! We couldn’t be more excited for them, and we can’t wait to meet the newest member of your family soon!

Lindsey and I haven’t been up to DC since we moved to Charlottesville, which is really a shame since it’s only about 2 hours away. The weather was supposed to be fair, and the busy-ness of wedding season is just around the corner, so we decided (somewhat last-minute) this week to head up for the day on Saturday. We went with a couple friends who are new to Charlottesville but familiar with the DC area. Our only regret was not checking the museum schedules before we headed up. We were really excited about the prospect of being able to visit the International Spy Museum, only to find out during lunch that it would be closing in a couple hours. We then made plans to revisit the nation’s capital for a longer duration to allow more time to explore said museum and others that simply cannot be squeezed into one short trip.

I carried my Pentax K100, a 50mm lens, one roll of Kodak T-Max, a Polaroid 250 Land Camera, and one pack of Fuji FP-3000B instant peel-apart film. The ones here were all shot with the Polaroid 250. I find that I always enjoy shooting a little more when I keep the camera and lens choice simple. I’ll have a few more to post when I get the other film back.

Shoot It Forward

A couple months ago, I had the pleasure of lending my services to Help Portrait in Concord, NC. I admit, I was a bit skeptical about the impact of gifting someone just one photo, but after a day of photographing people who may have otherwise never had their portrait made, my mind was changed. Families who lost everything, including all of their photos, in a house fire; a couple who hadn’t had portraits made since they were married and their families joined; others who have struggled for years to survive and have never had their picture taken. They all now have portraits to replace what was lost, or what they didn’t have the chance or means to have to begin with. I didn’t understand how much a photo could mean until that day. Most of us, especially we photographers, take for granted the fact that we can take, process, and print photos so relatively quickly and easily. It was an incredibly powerful project to be a part of, and I look forward to hopefully being able to help again this year.

All of that being said, I have been trying to think of ways to continue to give back throughout the year. So, I am announcing a new project that I hope you will be a part of as well. It’s called “Shoot It Forward.” Every quarter or so, I will do a free shoot and a framed 8×10 print for a person, couple, or family who is in need or just deserves a little break.

This is where you come in. Please use the contact form below or email me, and send me stories of someone you know who you think would truly treasure having their portrait made. I will read each and every message and hopefully get to every person/group mentioned.

I hope you’ll help me give back a little in this way.

Charlottesville, VA : Around Town

We had absolutely gorgeous weather for a few days in a row a couple weeks ago, so Ron Dressel and I decided we’d take advantage of a bit of it and wander around town, snapping photos here and there as we went. It’s really nice to get out and shoot for no reason other than to shoot sometimes, even if I only take what feel like snapshots along the way.

These were all shot on my Mamiya 645AF with either my 45mm f/2.8, 80mm f/1.9, or 150mm f/2.8 on Fuji Neopan Acros 100 or Fuji 400h that I later converted to black and white in Lightroom. They were all processed and scanned by the wonderful folks at Pro Camera here in Charlottesville. I have a few others that I shot on Fuji Astia 100f that I’m going to have to wait a bit longer on, but I’ll post those as well as soon as I get them back.

Kevin and Julie : Wedding

Kevin and Julie’s end-of-fall November 5th wedding was one where I had my eye on the weather forecast everyday for about two weeks leading up to the big day. The wedding was held at one of my favorite venues in the Triangle, The Pavilions at The Angus Barn, and its beautiful grounds beg for as many outdoor photos as possible. We lucked out and had the most perfect weather anyone could have asked for. Kevin and Julie chose a sunset, lakeside ceremony. I doubt there were few places more serene that day as under the expertly decorated arch in front of family and friends all gathered to celebrate the union of this beautiful couple. The reception was a blast, thanks to the ever brilliant aural musings of Hipshack and the heavenly catering and stop-at-nothing-to-please staff of Angus Barn. The night was topped off with sparklers and an exit in a masterfully restored Chevy Bel Air.

A few other notes of interest… Julie designed and made the bridesmaids’ earrings and designed the programs which were then printed on wood veneer. Her earrings and necklace were borrowed from her mom and were a gift from her dad to her mom over 25 years ago. Her pearl bracelet was restrung from one that her grandparents gave her when she was younger, and she added the closure from a necklace her dad gave her. The rings tied in the bouquet are Julie’s parents’. The rhinestone hairpiece and Kevin’s cufflinks are both vintage, circa 1930′s and 1920′s respectively.

I love a good styled shoot with great details meticulously thought out and placed precisely, but many times, a simpler shoot where the couple’s love for each other is allowed to shine on its own is more fitting and compelling. (The guys tend to be drawn more to these, too.) Matt and Julia have the kind of affection for each other that can be seen in everything they do. The way they talk to each other, look at each other, even the smallest touches reaffirm over and over how each feels about the other and how much they can’t wait to start their lives together. I’m beyond excited to be shooting their wedding this Spring, but for now, on to the engagement photos…

These were all shot on Fuji Pro 400H with a Mamiya 645AF and a Mamiya-Sekor “C” 80mm f/1.9 and were processed and scanned by Richard Photo Lab.

I am always excited when Michelle Smith contacts me about doing shoots with her. Our ideas about good design and simple, organic aesthetic styling always line up brilliantly. I love having an idea or a concept for a shoot, sometimes vague as it may be, then seeing it materialize to perfection with every last detail flawlessly and meticulously covered, compliments of Michelle.
